Building the Infrastructure of Solidarity

Entre mis experiencias organizando en América Latina y en la ciudad de Nueva York, he pasado décadas viendo repetirse el mismo patrón: una comunidad con todo lo que necesita —conocimiento, compromiso, relaciones y personas dispuestas a ayudar— pero sin un puente que conecte a un grupo con el siguiente. Las personas existen. Los recursos existen. Lo que suele faltar es el hilo que los une.

Between my experiences organizing in Latin America and in New York City, I have spent decades watching the same pattern repeat itself: a community with everything it needs — knowledge, commitment, relationships, and people willing to help — but no bridge connecting one group to the next. The people exist. The resources exist. What is often missing is the thread that ties them together.

Esa, creo, es una pregunta compartida tanto por el movimiento de economía solidaria como por mi propio trabajo: ¿cómo construimos las relaciones, los sistemas y la infraestructura que permiten que la solidaridad de una comunidad se transforme en capacidad colectiva duradera?

That, I believe, is a question shared by both the solidarity economy movement and my own work: how do we build the relationships, systems, and infrastructure that allow communities to transform solidarity into lasting collective capacity?

Mientras buena parte de la innovación actual se enfoca en crear productos, empresas o tecnologías, mi trabajo se ha centrado en algo menos visible: la infraestructura que permite que personas, organizaciones y comunidades coordinen sus esfuerzos para crecer juntas, en lugar de trabajar unas junto a otras de forma aislada.

While much of today's innovation focuses on creating products, companies, or technologies, my work has centered on something less visible: the infrastructure that enables people, organizations, and communities to coordinate their efforts so they can grow together instead of working alongside one another in isolation.

De esa pregunta surgieron dos iniciativas que, aunque nacieron de experiencias distintas, convergen en el mismo problema: ¿cómo construimos la infraestructura que permite que las iniciativas de economía solidaria evolucionen de proyectos aislados a sistemas interconectados capaces de transformar la economía en su conjunto?

Two initiatives emerged from those questions — different experiences that ultimately converge on the same problem: how can we build the infrastructure that enables solidarity economy initiatives to evolve from isolated projects into interconnected systems capable of transforming the broader economy?

Dignity Toolkit

Dignity Toolkit nació de necesidades comunitarias inmediatas. Mientras organizaba junto a comunidades inmigrantes en Brooklyn durante la crisis de solicitantes de asilo, fui testigo de actos extraordinarios de solidaridad todos los días. Voluntarios, comunidades religiosas, defensores legales, organizaciones de barrio y redes de ayuda mutua respondieron con una generosidad notable.

Dignity Toolkit grew out of immediate community needs. While organizing alongside immigrant communities in Brooklyn during the asylum seeker crisis, I witnessed extraordinary acts of solidarity every day. Volunteers, faith communities, legal advocates, neighborhood organizations, and mutual aid networks responded with remarkable generosity.

Pero también vi que pasaba otra cosa. A medida que la crisis inmediata disminuía, muchas de las relaciones, los sistemas de coordinación y el conocimiento comunitario que se habían construido con un enorme esfuerzo colectivo iban desapareciendo poco a poco. Sin la infraestructura para preservar y conectar nuestro trabajo, perdimos la memoria de lo que habíamos construido juntos —y con ella, la continuidad necesaria para seguir construyendo sobre esos esfuerzos, en lugar de empezar de cero cada vez que surgía una nueva crisis.

Yet I also watched something else happen. As the immediate crisis subsided, many of the relationships, coordination systems, and community knowledge that had been built through enormous collective effort gradually disappeared. Without the infrastructure to preserve and connect our work, we lost the memory of what we had built together — and with it, the continuity needed to build on those efforts rather than beginning again each time a new crisis emerged.

Dignity Toolkit es un intento de darle a esa solidaridad una columna vertebral. Es una plataforma de coordinación segura, encriptada y diseñada desde la privacidad, pensada para conectar personas, voluntarios, organizaciones y redes de confianza, para que la solidaridad pueda seguir creciendo en lugar de empezar desde cero cada vez.

Dignity Toolkit is an attempt to give that solidarity a backbone. It is a secure, encrypted, privacy-first coordination platform designed to connect people, volunteers, organizations, and trusted networks so that solidarity can continue growing instead of starting from zero every time.

Aunque se desarrolló inicialmente para apoyar a organizaciones que atienden a comunidades inmigrantes —coordinando apoyo legal, almacenando documentos importantes de forma segura, comunicando necesidades comunitarias y fortaleciendo la respuesta rápida— fue diseñada intencionalmente como infraestructura adaptable, capaz de apoyar muchas otras iniciativas de economía solidaria que buscan una colaboración más fuerte sin dejar de proteger la autonomía y la privacidad de la comunidad.

Although it was initially developed to support organizations serving immigrant communities — including coordinating legal support, securely storing important documents, communicating community needs, and strengthening rapid response — it was intentionally designed as adaptable infrastructure that can support many different solidarity economy initiatives seeking stronger collaboration while protecting community autonomy and privacy.

PHREVO

PHREVO (Planet and Human Revolution) surgió de una pregunta distinta, pero estrechamente relacionada: ¿qué pasaría si la actividad económica misma pudiera ser una fuente de regeneración social y ecológica, en lugar de requerir que los movimientos de solidaridad reparen el daño que producen los sistemas económicos convencionales?

PHREVO (Planet and Human Revolution) emerged from a different but closely related question: what if economic activity itself could become a source of social and ecological regeneration, rather than requiring solidarity movements to repair the damage produced by conventional economic systems?

PHREVO explora la idea de una Economía de Impacto Social: una arquitectura económica en la que la inversión, el intercambio y la innovación se evalúan no solo por su retorno financiero, sino también por su contribución a la dignidad humana, la resiliencia comunitaria, la participación democrática y el bienestar del mundo vivo.

PHREVO explores the idea of a Social Impact Economy — an economic architecture in which investment, exchange, and innovation are evaluated not only by financial returns, but also by their contribution to human dignity, community resilience, democratic participation, and the well-being of the living world.

Una pregunta compartida

A Shared Question

En el fondo, Dignity Toolkit y PHREVO son el mismo proyecto visto desde escalas distintas. Uno opera a nivel de base, fortaleciendo comunidades al mejorar su capacidad de organizarse, coordinarse y cuidarse mutuamente. El otro explora cómo el sistema económico más amplio podría rediseñarse para reconocer, conectar y recompensar esos mismos valores.

At their core, Dignity Toolkit and PHREVO represent the same project viewed from different scales. One operates at the grassroots level, strengthening communities by improving their ability to organize, coordinate, and care for one another. The other explores how the broader economic system itself might be redesigned to recognize, connect, and reward those same values.

Ambos parten de la misma convicción: la solidaridad perdura cuando tiene una infraestructura que la sostiene. Sin ella, incluso los movimientos más poderosos luchan por sostenerse en el tiempo.

Both are rooted in the same conviction: solidarity endures when it has supportive infrastructure. Without it, even the most powerful movements struggle to sustain themselves over time.

Esa es la invitación detrás de ambos proyectos: cooperativas de trabajadores, organizadores de ayuda mutua, iniciativas indígenas y bioregionales, organizaciones comunitarias, educadores, investigadores y todos los que ya están construyendo la economía solidaria, a explorar cómo estos modelos, sistemas y prácticas pueden interconectarse más profundamente — y qué infraestructura compartida podría fortalecer esa colaboración, manteniendo siempre a las comunidades mismas en el centro de la toma de decisiones.

That's the invitation behind both projects: worker cooperatives, mutual aid organizers, Indigenous and bioregional initiatives, community organizations, educators, researchers, and everyone already building the solidarity economy, to explore how these models, systems, and practices might become more deeply interconnected — and what shared infrastructure could strengthen that collaboration while keeping communities themselves at the center of decision-making.
